Montauk Downs Golf Course Hike
Distance: 3.5+ miles
Level: Moderate pace
EHTPS Members Only Event.
For the first time EHTPS and New York State Parks are providing an opportunity for a hike on the Montauk Downs golf course. The course is normally closed to the non-golfing public. Nestled in the rolling terrain of North Neck in Montauk, the course contains wetlands, numerous trees and views of Lake Montauk. New York State is providing a guide for the hike.
Meet 3 PM at 50 South Fairview Avenue Montauk, NY 11954. Park in the parking area and meet at the clubhouse.

Napeague State Park, Amagansett
Distance: 2.5+ miles
Level: Moderate pace
Join us for a relaxed-pace hike at Napeague State Park that features a pitch pine forest, oak and holly trees, a meadow, and dunes, as well as a walk along Gardiners Bay, where you have wonderful views of Gardiner's Island and other coastline. You'll see the remains of portions of the old Menhaden Fish Factory and more.
Meet at the State parking lot on Cranberry Hole Road across from Napeague Meadow Road off Rt. 27, just west of The Lobster Roll (a.k.a. LUNCH). Despite this being a relatively short and totally flat hike, it does include soft sand on portions of the trail and a sandy and rocky bay beach that we'll be walking on as well.

Chatfield’s Hole, East Hampton
Distance: 3 miles
Level: Moderate pace
Named after an early East Hampton settler, Chatfield’s Hole is a beautiful glacial kettle hole. To reach the freshwater wetlands, we will follow the Northwest Path enjoying an oak forest sprinkled with pitch pines and white pines. One of the town’s first open-space land acquisitions for preservation and public use in 1976. One of the town’s first trails cut and formally opened in 1989.
Meet at the kiosk parking area on Route 114 at the intersection of Edward’s Hole Rd in East Hampton (2 miles north of Stephen Hands Path). Bring liquids.

Hither Woods New Year’s Day Hike
Distance: 7.5 miles
Level: Moderate pace with some hills
For the 37th Consecutive Year hike the trails of the magnificent Hither Woods to ring in the New Year! We will hike past Split Rock, the Devil’s Cradle, Ram Level, the Lost Boulder, and of course the spectacular coastline that is the northern boundary of Hither Woods.
Meet at 10:00 a.m. at Hither Hills Overlook (West Overlook), north side of Route 27, Montauk. Bring lunch & liquids.

Springs Woodblock & Nancy Kelley Preserve
Distance: 4 miles
Level: Moderate pace
Finish New Year’s week by hiking the woods and former fields of the Talmage Farm, in northern Springs. We will hike from Three Mile Harbor Road to the salt marshes of Accabonac Creek, where we’ll visit the scenic Nancy Kelley Preserve and the Nature Conservancy’s Merrill Lake Sanctuary.
Meet 10:00 a.m. on east side of Three Mile Harbor Road about 100 yards north of Maidstone Market (which is opposite Flaggy Hole Road). Wet footing possible in the Accabonac Meadows so waterproof shoes are recommended. Bring snacks & liquids.

Napeague to Montauk
Distance: 10 miles
Level: Moderate pace, hilly in places
This is an experiment to see if anyone is interested in the occasional hike that's longer and brisker than usual. We will start at Iodine Beach on the eastern shore of Napeague Harbor. We will hike five miles east to the high bluffs around Quincetree Landing, then come back the same way. Somewhat hilly. Great views of Gardiner's Island and the Block Island Sound.
Meet at 10 AM in the parking lot at the north end of Napeague Harbor Road (off Route 27).

Stony Hill, Amagansett Hike
Distance: 4-5 miles
Level: Moderate pace, hilly in places
Join us for this hike through the farm fields of Peconic Land Trust’s Deborah Ann Light Preserve and onward into the Stony Hill Woods, most of which is also owned by Peconic Land Trust. We will hike as far as Nancy’s Rock before we swing back for home on the de Cuevas Trail, named for the family that preserved most of the Stony Hill Woods.
Meet at 10 AM on road shoulder of Abraham’s Path, about 1/4 mile north of Town Lane, Amagansett.

A Short Little Hike at Rocky Point
Distance: 2 miles
Level: Moderate pace
Looking for a short hike on Thanksgiving Saturday? Well, this is it. Rocky Point in Hither Woods is redolent of old Montauk names like Rod’s Valley, Redmond’s Bend, and Minie Racketts. Enjoy a little jaunt on the trails followed by a cobbly beach walk and see ‘Round the Corner Rock. You will learn some Montauk history along the way.
Meet at 10 AM at west end of Navy Road, Montauk. Distance: 2 miles with some rocky beach walking.

Northwest Historic Hike (Grace Estate)
Distance: 4+ miles
Level: Moderate pace
Delve deep into the history of Northwest Woods and the Grace Estate on this Thanksgiving weekend collaborative hike with the East Hampton Historical Society. We will visit the lost farmsteads near Northwest Harbor where people lived until the late 1800s, when the Northwest community rapidly fell apart and was abandoned. We'll stop at Kirk's Place, and the Northwest Schoolhouse site as well.
Meet 10:00 a.m. on Mile Hill Road opposite the Highway to Phoebe Van Scoy. Bring snacks and liquids.

Northwest Loop from The Lone Grave, East Hampton
Distance: ~6 miles

There will be plenty to see on this fascinating circuit hike through the center of Northwest Woods. Learn a little history as you go. The Lone Grave, Stein’s Kettle, Chatfield’s Hole, Jason’s Rock, Joshua’s Hole, and the White Pine Forest … they are all on the route.
Meet at 10 AM on Swamp Road opposite Bull Path, in Northwest Woods, at Benjamin Hubbard’s gravesite. Bring snacks & liquids.

Alewife Pond and Brook, East Hampton
Distance: 3+miles
Level: Moderate pace
Alewife Pond in Cedar Point County Park is a treasure. It's connected to Northwest Harbor by the meandering Alewive Brook. (Why is one spelled with an f and the other with a v? Nobody knows.) We will walk partway around the pond clockwise and then continue to the harbor on a trail that goes alongside the brook. We will pause at the harbor, then return the same way. The trail is mostly flat, wide and sandy. Lots of delicious water views.

Montauk Point State Park
Distance: 3.5+/- miles
Level: Moderate pace, some hills
Join us for a relaxed-pace hike on an out-and-back portion of Montauk Point State Park.
We will be meeting at the EAST Overlook on the south side of Montauk Highway just past Deep Hollow Ranch.
BE ADVISED: the first .4-mile is a steep downhill that is narrow and eroded in spots and includes a few steep drops. As this is an out-and-back-hike, you will be finishing the hike on the same trail, this time on a steep uphill. This hike is for people who are comfortable with negotiating tricky areas. The remaining part of the hike is fine. You will get to see and be at Oyster Pond.
Be sure to enjoy the spectacular views at the overlook.

Autumn in the woods. Come out and enjoy a hike through Amagansett’s Stony Hill, before we swing north into the East Side Preserve and finish through Jacob’s Farm.
Meet at 10 AM at the Jacob’s Farm trailhead, a road shoulder pull-off on Red Dirt Road about 1,000 feet east of Accabonac Road. Bring snacks and liquids.

Buckskill Hike, East Hampton

Following Larry Penny Memorial Celebration, which begins at 12:00 noon at LTV Studios, 75 Industrial Road. To celebrate the decades of effort that Larry Penny devoted to the environment of the East End, especially that of East Hampton, with love, skill, and passion, we will take an easy 2.5-mile jaunt through the Buckskill Woods.
Meeting place will be LTV Studios, but we will drive from there to the starting point at The Clubhouse, 174 Daniels Hole Road, East Hampton.

Poetry Hike at Sammy’s Beach, East Hampton
Distance: 2 miles
Level: Moderate pace
We will stop twice on this shore hike for poetry readings. BYOP (bring your own poems) written by you or someone else. Or just come along to enjoy the scene.
Meet 10 AM at the end of Sammy’s Beach Road, a right turn off Old House Landing Road. An East Hampton Town parking permit is required.

Fort Pond Bay History Hike with the Montauk Library
Distance: 3 miles
Level: Moderate pace
Join us for a collaborative and scenic hike with the Montauk Library and learn about the history of Fort Pond Bay. The moderate-paced hike will start at Rod’s Valley overlooking the bay and continue along the Hither Woods Coastal Trail. We’ll get various vantage points of the bay and shoreline and learn about early Indigenous sites, where the Amistad landed, Montauk’s first fishing village and deepwater port, the Long Island Rail Road’s development of the area, and the military occupation during WWI and WWII. We’ll continue through Hither Woods Preserve and loop back on Old North Road.

Hike through Hither Hills State Park, including the Stephen Talkhouse Path along Napeague Bay and the beautiful and secluded Fresh Pond. We’ll hike a clockwise loop from the Hither Hills Overlook beginning with Elisha’s Valley and ending on the famed Serpent’s Back Trail.

Northwest Harbor, East Hampton

Northwest Harbor was the main port of East Hampton from 1654 until the first wharf was built in Sag Harbor in 1761. Join us for a short walk around the beach of the harbor and learn about its colorful past as we enjoy views of Shelter Island, Cedar Point Park and Barcelona Neck.
