Big Reed Pond in Montauk County Park

Abounding in history - natural, Native American, and contemporary - the trail system around Big Reed Pond in Montauk County Park ranks among East Hampton's most diverse and beautiful. On this hike, we'll visit the remote Hilda Lindley House and keep a special eye open for spring ephemeral plants emerging from their long slumber. Some uneven terrain: waterproof footwear recommended.

Beautiful circuit hike through the Grassy Hollow and Grace Estate areas of East Hampton Northwest Woods, as springtime arrives, and the oaks of Northwest Woods begin to leaf out.

Meditative Beach Walk, Amagansett

Jefferey Macintyre has taught yoga, meditation and breathing techniques (pranayama) for years. Join him for a 2-mile beach walk with stretching before and after. Learn how beneficial the sea air can be, bringing it into our movement for energy and revitalization.

Springs Bike Ride, East Hampton

At the start, the group will visit the Springs Historical Society and Community Library where we’ll hear about the rich history of their community organization, their plans for the summer, and highlights of the collection. 20-mile bike ride to follow, generally flat – highlights include Gerard Drive and Louse Point. We should be back by 12:30.

The Osborn Homestead, Wainscott

The Osborn Homestead at 66 Wainscott Main Street is the largest Community Preservation Fund purchase in the history of East Hampton Town. We'll view the property and its immediate surroundings with Wainscott Heritage Project President and Our Hamptons Podcast co-host Esperanza Leon and be joined by Hilary Osborn Malecki for a very special presentation.

Northwest Harbor was the main port of East Hampton from 1654 until the first wharf was built in Sag Harbor in 1761. Join us for a short walk around the beach of the harbor and learn about its colorful past as we enjoy views of Shelter Island, Cedar Point Park and Barcelona Neck.

Hardscrabble Loop, East Hampton
Distance: 3.25 miles

Enjoy a moderate paced hike over basically flat terrain through scenic woodland setting of the 700 acre Buckskill Preserve. See a mix of native oak and pitch pine dotted with mountain laurel, ferns and wintergreen.
Meet on Route 114 just a few yards north of the intersection with Stephen Hands Path and opposite the farm stand. Bring liquids.

Hike - Shadmoor State Park Along the Cliffs, Montauk
Distance: 2 miles
Level: Moderate pace
This scenic hike affords a mesmerizing panoramic view from a bluff trail overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, including dramatic hoodoo formations carved by decades of beach erosion. The trail also passes through wooded areas of shadbush and black cherry and past historic World War II lookouts. Always amazing no matter the weather.
Meet in the parking lot of Shadmoor State Park off Rt 27, about a half mile east of downtown Montauk.

Hike - Gerard Drive, Springs
Distance: 3+ miles
Level: Moderate pace
Enjoy the beauty and learn some history of Accabonac Harbor and Gardiner’s Bay as we walk along Gerard Drive. This hike will include a look at properties recently acquired through the Town’s Community Preservation Fund as well as a look at some of the original homes along the way.

Hike - Montauk County Park

Level: Moderate pace
This varied and diverse trail includes hiking adjacent to and views of Big Reed Pond, a Native-American village with its remains, and distinctive landscapes. Please note that in some places, these trails do have uneven terrain, rocks and roots and may be muddy.
Meet at the parking area (the dirt entrance by the Montauk County Park Big Reed Nature Trails sign) off East Lake Drive, approximately 2 miles north from the intersection of Rt. 27. Bring water and tick/insect protection.

Hike - Sammy’s Beach, East Hampton
Distance: 3 miles
Level: Moderate pace
You don’t have to be Jewish to join this “Between Seders” hike, but you will get a chance to nosh on matzah, supplied by the hike leader. (You'll have to bring your own gefilte fish and charoset.) We will take advantage of the fact that the Sammy’s Beach peninsula from the air looks like the state of Florida. We will start at the parking lot at the end of Old House Landing Road (Pensacola), then walk east along the beach, pass Tallahassee and arrive at the inlet (Jacksonville). We’ll head south along the inlet (Atlantic Coast) to the southernmost point facing Three Mile Harbor (Miami) and then follow the sand road (Gulf Coast) back to the parking lot. After a brief tour of the 19th-century Van Scoy homestead, cemetery and school, we'll hike at a moderate pace along the Paumanok Path through rolling Grassy Hollow before crossing into the Grace Estate to visit pristine Northwest Harbor and enjoy scenic views of Cedar Point Lighthouse, Shelter Island and Sag Harbor.

We will be joined by the incomparable local historian Hugh King, who will share his insights into the Gardiner, Pantigo and Hook windmills; we may be able to access their interiors. A relaxed-pace, lovely hike in Montauk Point State Park, on the north side of Rt. 27 (also known as Montauk Point State Blvd), through forest, streams and grasslands, with views of Oyster Pond and Block Island Sound. We will be crossing Ogden’s Brook Bridge, which is a story itself. Meet at Camp Hero Road, which is south of Rt. 27/Montauk Point State Blvd., not far from the Lighthouse. Morton National Wildlife Refuge with its exceptionally diverse habitats (including bay beach, brackish and freshwater ponds, kettle holes, salt marshes and maritime oak/ red cedar forests). Hike one of Montauk’s newest trails, the North Neck Trail, which dips and curves through beautiful terrain. Optional second half of the hike will take hikers into the Culloden Point Preserve. Meet 10 AM at the Culloden Point historic marker, west side of Flamingo Avenue, about 400 feet north of Wills Point Road. (Look for a red fire hydrant.) Distance: 4 to 6 miles, moderate pace.
